The African continent is exceedingly rich in human and natural resources. Of some 900 million people who live on the continent, fully 75% live in rural areas that depend heavily, if not exclusively, on the production and use of natural resources for their livelihoods. This high level of reliance on natural resources is expected to remain through at least the next generation. Agriculture is not only a key to both rural and urban food security and to household livelihoods, but is also a major contributor to the export economy and thus to foreign exchange earnings. It is also the most important source of employment in most countries of the region.
GoodWorks is working with partners across the agricultural value chain to develop projects that will overcome many of the production and post-production constraints of emerging markets, including agricultural training, introducing new technologies, irrigation techniques, meeting international food safety and sanitary standards, cold storage and distribution infrastructure, and improving access to markets for raw and value-added commodities.
The advice and guidance that GoodWorks has provided to 3 Guys Coffee International, a U.S. based start-up company, led to the company’s first acquisition and importation of specialty coffee from Rwanda. Our continued work promises to lead to additional imports from Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia among other countries on the continent.
